Oh holy shit they found Silphium alive and growing in the wild.

Like now that I am awake I need to reiterate how huge this is. It was presumed harvested to extinction by the Romans. It was a favorite flavoring and according to historians one of the best contraceptives ever known. True or not it would be fantastic to study that but it being extinct made that impossible.

This is such a huge deal! I hope they get it figured how to grow it.

beastly reminder

Almost. Years ago my computer suddenly stopped working and lost everything on it. Fortunately a relatively recent backup still existed bc of my family, a recent parts switch, and dumb luck. But last year a friend of mine got hacked and lost close to everything he had done creatively in the last 17-ish years. Art. Novels in progress. Entire conlangs. DnD character Sheets. Music he had made. All gone. He never backed any of it up. Few months later I started this habit (or ritual, almost) of drawing a reminder beast any time I would make a full complete backup. In hopes that seeing these things might remind others and myself. (Another factor here is that I am an animator and some of the stuff on my computer took literal years to make. And the film university I go to urges us to take this stuff seriously, too.)

40,000 years ago, early humans painted hands on the wall of a cave. This morning, my baby cousin began finger painting. All of recorded history happened between these two paintings of human hands. The Nazca Lines and the Mona Lisa. The first TransAtlantic flight and the first voyage to the Moon. Humanity invented the wheel, the telescope, and the nuclear bomb. We eradicated wild poliovirus types 2 and 3. We discovered radio waves, dinosaurs, and the laws of thermodynamics. Freedom Riders crossed the South. Hippies burned their draft cards. Countless genocides, scientific advancements, migrations, and rebellions. More than a hundred billion humans lived and died between these two paintings—one on a sheet of paper, and one on the inside of a cave. At the dawn of time, ancient humans stretched out their hands. And this morning, a child reached back.

How we got here, I don’t know, but the DC Fandom on Twitter has taken it upon themselves to market DC’s Blue Beetle for Warner Bros since they’re not doing a damn thing for the movie and it has become legitimately hilarious. The memes have gotten so big, so ridiculous and so hilarious that Xolo Mariduena himself, yes the star of Blue Beetle who’s playing Jaime Reyes, is now aware of DC fans taking it upon themselves to market Blue Beetle.

Keep it going, Blue Beetle fam. This shit is hilarious.

This hummingbird moth (a member of the sphinx moth family) was steadily and relentlessly working his way through the clump of bee balm flowers this afternoon. Two actual hummingbirds spent about ten minutes fighting furiously over the territory, while this little guy was just lost in the sauce and ignoring them both. I love them.
